Happy National Farm Workers Day Durham!
First, today's weather:
Windy; a p.m. t-storm or two. High: 69 Low: 54.
Here are the top five stories in Durham today:
- The Durham Police Department arrested a man on Wednesday afternoon after he barricaded himself inside an apartment, armed, for two-and-a-half hours. Authorities arrested the man without incident at the apartment on Wadesboro Street, and no one was injured. Witnesses informed the police that there were three children and their mother inside the home who were unharmed when the SWAT team arrived. (WRAL)
- The family of Edward 'Teddy' Tivnan is speaking out after walking out during the sentencing of Daniel Mohar. Tivnan's sister says that the journey has been emotionally draining, as they spent days in court before learning that Mohar would be pleading down to involuntary manslaughter charges. For years the family was told that the facts of what happened supported a murder charge, however that proved untrue. (WRAL)
- Due to the surging oil prices, airlines are pulling back on leisure routes. JetBlue is already planning to cut or suspend 27 routes this summer. According to industry experts, cutting the routes makes business sense as the longer routes consume more jet fuel and make less sense for carriers. Two of the routes that have been cute include flights from RDU to Los Angeles and RDU to Newark. (CBS17)
- The Durham YouthWorks program is accepting applications for 14-24 year-olds to participate in their youth career program this summer. The program helps young people develop critical skills and explore career options within the city. The 14-15 program offers career exploration, the 16-18 program offers career pathway discovery, and 18-24 year olds can partake in ready-for-work programs. (CBS17)
