🌱 Mayor O'Neal on Weekend Violence + Durham School of Arts Relocation

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Durham.

Good Morning Durham, It's Alcohol Awareness Month!

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny and warm. High: 83 Low: 64.

Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. On Monday, Durham's Mayor Elaine O'Neal spoke out regarding the weekend gun violence that left three dead among the at least 10 who were shot. O'Neal emphasized that being an elected official does not exempt her from feeling pain over gun violence. "It goes back to the same issues: Poverty, lack of access to job opportunity, lots of access to guns," said O'Neal, as she also expressed that violence is a community issue that needs a community response. (WRAL)
  2. The latest addition to the weekend list of shootings came from a multi-vehicle crash in which one vehicle's windshield was pierced by 5 bullet holes. Officers have not released any further information, and traffic was diverted from the scene at the intersection of Burke Street and House Avenue. (CBS17)
  3. A $5,000 reward is being offered by the Durham County Sheriff's Office for information leading to an identification and arrest in the shooting at two on-duty officers on Saturday. The officers were in the area of Keystone Place and Dearborn Drive around 9:30 pm working an active and ongoing investigation when two men fired multiple shots at them. At this time the suspects have not been identified and are at large. (CBS17)
  4. Durham's School of the Arts is facing the decision to relocate, or remain at the location it has occupied since 1995. Even parents who have supported DSA's campus move are facing mixed emotions. The current location allows the campus to be connected to the downtown Durham art scene, and the move will be costly for the school, however the current campus is outdated and in need of major renovations. (INDY Week)
  5. Organizers of next week's Raleigh-Durham Startup Week are expecting hundreds of participants to come and learn from entrepreneurs and investors during the four-day event. The programing starts on Tuesday, April 19 and features four themes and a keynote session on Wednesday, April 20. (WRAL Tech Wire)
