Here are the top stories in Durham today:

  1. Durham citizens were charged with selecting the two candidates who will run in November to replace current Mayor Steve Schewel. Schewel is not running for reelection after serving four years. Polls closed at 7:30 pm. (CBS17) Elaine O'Neal and Javiera Caballero are projected to advance to the November ballot. (abc11)
  2. Several drivers reported that their cars were pelted with an acid-like substance on NC Highway 147 in Durham this weekend. One person said, "It had sort of a bleach smell. It kind of looked brown. It was greasy." The substance reportedly was sprayed from above the tree lines, raining down onto the cars. (WRAL)
  3. The Durham County Fraternal Order of Police said that only a little over half of the police department's positions were staffed on some nights this weekend. The number of staffed positions included officers working overtime, although fewer officers are volunteering to come in on their days off. On nights that the staffing was lowest, there were gunshot incidents leaving cause for concern. (CBS17)
  4. Healthcare company, GlaxoSmithKline has announced plans to move it's corporate hub out of the Research Triangle Park and into downtown Durham. GSK has been present in the RTP since 1972, but with shifts to work from home and other work flexibility, it will be downsizing. The move will not cause any job loss and should happen early in 2022. (abc11)
  5. Valdivia Logistics, a transportation and shipping company, will be closing three of its Durham County sites. 131 employees will be affected by the closure according to a notice filed with the NC Department of Commerce. The three locations will be permanently closed as of October 16. (WRAL Tech Wire)
