Here are the top stories in Durham today:

  1. Javiera Caballero finished second in the October 5 primary, with 25% of the vote. Now she is dropping out of the race. Caballero congratulated Judge O'Neal on her strong performance in the primary election. Although she suspended her campaign, her name will still appear on the ballot November 2. (abc11)
  2. The search that began in June has finally come to an end, as Durham City Manager Wanda Page announced that Patrice V. Andrews of Morrisville will take on the role of Durham Police Chief. Andrews will officially take over on November 1. Andrews has 25 years of experience in law enforcement and began as a patrol officer in Durham back in 1997. (WRAL, CBS17)
  3. Residents in Durham are talking to the city council to express their frustrations with noise-making mufflers on various vehicles. One resident in downtown Durham says that it has always been an issue, but over the past few years it has become much worse. City Counselor Marilyn Crawford has proposed a bill that would have Durham Regional Police Services stopping drivers and charging those with modified mufflers or mufflers causing excessive exhaust.   4. A Durham man is being charged after police discovered he was running a scrap metal operation without valid licensure. Jackson Bainbridge was invited to be interviewed under caution, but failed to attend and was charged with carrying on a business as a scrap metal dealer without an authorized license.   5. Turtle Bay will be opening its new Durham restaurant this Friday. This is Durham's first Caribbean restaurant and bar and it will be opening on The Riverwalk Durham. (East Durham News)
