The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Durham.

Happy New Year's Day, also known as National Hangover Day!
First, today's weather:
A shower in the a.m.; cloudy. High: 75 Low: 65.
Here are the top five stories today in Durham:
- Durham County's jail is one of only a few in the state that provides medication-assisted treatment (MAT). MAT is considered best practice to care for people with opioid use disorder which affects as much as 85% of the prison population. The program that Durham's jail runs sees far less recidivism, but many governments don't have it due to the cost. (NC Health News)
- For the second time this week, North Carolina reported a record-high positivity rate at 22% on Thursday. Hospitalizations have nearly double statewide since the beginning of December. Dr. Cameron Wolfe of Duke Health says that staffers have been personally impacted by COVID with more than 150 new cases among the staff, putting them at nearly 700 employees sick with COVID. (abc11)
- The City of Durham is accepting applications for the Durham Cultural Advisory Board. Members of the advisory board will partner with city officials and advocate for cultural development within Durham through various responsibilities. (Durham NC)
- The North Carolina Supreme Court decided last week that an individual justice can take two options when weighing a request for recusal. The order allows justices to decide for themselves or get the rest of their court colleagues to decide. This order should allow a long-watched case over whether the 2018 constitutional amendment requiring photo voter identification is legitimate. (WWAY3)
- Groups representing N.C. sheriffs, district attorneys, and Superior Court clerks are calling for the N.C. Supreme Court to reopen candidate filing for upcoming elections. The groups are not challenging the court's decision to delay elections, but they argue that shutting down the 2022 candidate filing has "caused unnecessary upheaval for candidates for public office."
