Here are the top stories in Durham today:

  1. On Thursday evening, Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead and Durham Police Chief Patrice Andrews answered questions from community members regarding gun violence and the broader topic of public safety. (CBS17) This came as city the Durham Homicide Memorial Quilt was placed inside the courthouse to show the impact of shootings. (Spectrum News 1)
  2. On Friday, Durham Public Schools hosted an event at Brogden Middle School to get students and family members vaccinated. (WRAL)
  3. The City of Durham is being recognized as a 2021 Digital Cities Survey winner recognizing the city for using technology to tackle social challenges, enhance services, strengthen cybersecurity, and more. (City of Durham Facebook)
  4. The Durham Highway Fire Department and Raleigh Fire Department worked together to put out a townhouse fire in Durham on Thursday night. The DHFD called for assistance due to the extent of the blaze, and they were able to put the fire out in under an hour. (CBS17)
  5. Durham County is working on it's backlog of applications for Emergency Rental Assistance Funds, and the City of Durham is working on creating a program to distribute the second round of funds. (CBS17)
  6. The North Carolina budget has officially been signed into law. Many state employees will receive pay raises as well as a drop in personal income tax. (FOX8) One of the more anticipated inclusions of the bill, the teaching subsidy, will exclude Wake, Durham and Mecklenburg counties. (abc11)
