Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. Durham firefighters are mourning after Assistant Fire Marshal Scott Merritt passed away on Sunday. Merritt was a long-time member of the North Carolina chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators and on the Fire-Arson Review Board for the NC Fire-Rescue Commission. (WRAL)
  2. The suspects in Thursday's fatal drive-by shooting are accused of also robbing a nearby apartment complex. Police have connected that incident to the armed robbery that took place moments earlier, but they have not said how many suspects were linked to the incidents. (WNCT9)
  3. Monday was the fourth straight day of prominent flight cancellations across the country, and RDU saw delays for service to Pittsburgh and Seattle. Most airlines suggest downloading their mobile apps to access flight information or make changes. (WRAL)
  4. North Carolina has 18 laws that are set t0 take effect on January 1, 2022. You can read about all of the regulations that will take place at the new year, from reducing regulations to help children with autism to government transparency. (Patch)
