Here are the top five stories today in Durham:
- The North Carolina Supreme Court struck down the state's congressional and General Assembly maps. The decision was 4-3 along party lines and directs the legislature to redraw plans by February 18 with an explanation of how they calculated partisan fairness of new boundaries. (npr)
- New data is showing that the temperature variance in Durham is a much wider variance than originally believed. In July of last year, volunteers began using heat sensors mounted on cars, bicycles, or in pockets to collect data about how warm areas of the city are. The data collected shows that the temperature variance is actually a margin of 10.4 degrees as opposed to the previous belief of a 6 degree variance. (WRAL)
- A baggage worker for JetBlue was seriously injured at RDU on Friday, sending them to the hospital. JetBlue says they are working to support the investigation into the injury that was caused when a baggage tug hit the worker. (abc11)
- An 8-year-old girl in Durham has turned her recent battle with cancer into an opportunity to raise money for others going through the same thing. Harper Harrell raised nearly $20,000 selling her "Peace Out Cancer" t-shirts that will give half of the proceeds to the V Foundation for cancer research, while using the other half to cover some of Harper's medical needs.(WRAL)
- Hundreds of families are still waiting for electric stoves two years after crews found that their appliances had not been properly vented or cleaned causing high levels of carbon monoxide. Families at the McDougald Terrace public housing complex had to be evacuated while crews investigated the source of the carbon monoxide. The housing authority stated they would replace all of the gas stoves, but after the pandemic hit, the Durham Housing Authority paused the installation. (CBS17)
