First, today's weather:

Breezy and milder in the p.m.. High: 68 Low: 64.

Here are the top five stories today in Durham:

  1. Outspoken family members of Edward "Teddy" Tivnan walked out of the sentencing of Daniel Mohar who pled to involuntary manslaughter on Monday afternoon for the incident that led to Tivnan's death on June 5, 2019. As Judge Josephine Kerr Davis ordered Mohar to serve up to eight months incarcerated, several of Tivnan's family members left the courtroom saying "This is why these crimes keep happening." (HeraldSun: Possible Paywalled Content)
  2. Both Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill have made it tot the semi-finals and will be facing off head-to-head for the first time ever in an NCAA tournament. The game is sure to be one to see, as it is Coach K's final season, and the rivalry between the two schools predates even Coach K's long career. The NCAA will be giving both schools 700 tickets for the semi-finals and students will have the opportunity to witness it all in person through a school lottery system. (WFMY)
  3. Durham officials hosted the 19th Annual Women's Forum on Tuesday evening. The theme for this year was "Providing Hope, Promoting Healing, Breaking the Bias." The event was hosted by the City of Durham Neighborhood Improvement Services Department Human Relations Division and was held virtually from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm and will be made available on the city's YouTube channel. (CBS17)
  4. North Carolina's Supreme Court has voted to strike down the state law that prevented people convicted of felonies from registering to vote. The decision on Monday expands the preliminary injunction issued last August. The decision could restore voting rights for tens of thousands of people previously convicted. (WCNC)
  5. CBS17 has issued a weather alert day for Thursday as the threat of severe weather increases. A strong cold front is moving into central N.C. in the afternoon and evening hours on Thursday and a line of organized storms could produce damaging winds or an isolated tornado. (CBS17)

Where should you invest as a Durham resident with a $149,000 nest egg? Thanks to a change in the legal code, there's a new investment Durham residents need to know about. In fact, Bloomberg asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now and many of them chose it.

This may surprise you, but it's fine art.

Growing your nest egg with art isn't new. Wealthy families like the Rockefellers have done it for centuries.

Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

Translation: Art could be one of the best investments for uncertain times.

Luckily for you, we found Masterworks. This revolutionary platform lets you invest in art by Warhol, Monet, Picasso without spending millions.

The best part? Anyone from your area can skip their waitlist*.
