Happy World Party Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny. High: 67 Low: 39.

Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. Before the Blue Devils took to the court on Saturday, fans got hyped up in a unique tradition. Students got amped up for what ended up being Coach K's final game, to the tune of 'Every Time We Touch' by Cascara. (USAToday) The final score was UNC 81-77 Duke, even though Duke was up in the first half. (cbssports)
  2. Interstate 85 north was closed for more than an hour on Friday afternoon due to a crash near Red Mill Road. The wreck was reported around 5:35 pm near mile marker 182. The Department of Transportation traffic camera at the scene showed at least three vehicles involved in the wreck. The road was reopened just before 7:00 pm and there is no word on injuries or the cause of the accident. (CBS17)
  3. Elshan Moridiabadi of Durham is taking time to teach Afghanistan refugees a little piece of their heritage. Moridiabadi is a chess grandmaster, and he spoke to students at Stough Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh on Friday. He introduced the students to the game that has roots in both Persia and India. there was a time back in the early 2000s when the Taliban government was first installed, where chess was banned. Now that the Taliban is back in control, the game could once again become a crime, and can give them some familiarity with their roots. (WRAL)
  4. The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado did touch down in the Triangle on Thursday, damaging the new Pfizer building. Originally it was unclear, but a twister was responsible for the high winds that damaged the building, as the storm survey teamed determined that the tornado had EF-1 strength. Early research indicates that the tornado only spent a few minutes on the ground and reached wind speeds of around 100 mph. (abc11)
