Here are the top stories in Durham today:
- The Willard Street Apartments held its grand opening in Durham on Thursday, and it is being hailed as the new standard for what affordable housing will look like by Mayor Steve Schewal. The apartments are home to 82 families paying rent at an income based rate. Affordable housing is recognized as spending less than 30% of your net income on mortgage and utilities, and some of the residents are paying less than $200 in rent. Mayor Schewal says that the Willard Street Apartments and others to come will fight gentrification in downtown. (abc11)
- Durham Freeway has plans to close some lanes this weekend. The North Carolina Department of Transportation said crews will be making concrete pavement repairs between Exit 8 and Exit 10 on both northbound and southbound sides. Southbound will have one lane closed from 4:00 pm-7:00 pm, and the right northbound lane will be closed at 6:00 pm with a full closure at 10:00 pm. (CBS17)
- Durham has already welcomed several Afghan refugee families to the area, and anticipates many more to come. Among the many challenges they are facing, one of the most complex is navigating the healthcare system during a global pandemic. Health insurance is incredibly uncommon in Afghanistan, and clinics in Durham are preparing to assist refugees in need. (WFAE)
- Seven candidates have filed to run for Durham mayor, and voters are speaking out about issues ahead of the October 5 municipal primary election. Among the issues weighing on voters minds, gun violence is one of the most pressing. Candidates are tasked with identifying how they will fill vacancies across law enforcement for public safety. (CBS17)
- A Durham man was arrested after breaking into a home on Longwood Drive in Hillsborough. 40-year-old Jose Daniel Martinez-Ortiz was arrested late Tuesday night on two counts of assault on a female as well as first degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, and breaking and entering. (abc11)
