Here are the top stories today in Durham:

  1. New numbers from the Durham Fraternal Order of Police show that the police department was short staffed on Friday. Only 54% of officer positions were filled when they had to respond to the Black Friday shooting. (WRAL) Police are still searching for the individuals responsible for Friday's shooting. (CBS17)
  2. A new crime prevention group called New Durham Vision is working to make a difference in the city. The group consists of community leaders, various organizations, former offenders, and current gang members. New Durham Vision is planning a meeting with city and county leaders on Saturday and the public will be invited to participate. (abc11)
  3. Dr. Mandy Cohen, the head of North Carolina's Department of Health and Human Services is stepping down. (Hickory Daily Record) Following the decision, Governor Roy Cooper has appointed Kody Kinsley to succeed Cohen on January 1, 2022. (WITN)
  4. The North Carolina General Assembly wrapped up nearly all of its work for the calendar year on Monday. It could be required back if vetoes, redistricting rulings, or other items require a return, but Representative John Torbett says that "it's an excellent outcome after a long, tedious year." (The Olympian)
  5. The North Carolina Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled burning permits statewide as of 5:00 pm Monday. According to Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler, "It is fall wildfire season in NC and a statewide burn ban is necessary to reduce the risk of fires starting and spreading quickly." (FOX8)
