Here are the top five stories in Durham today:
- Six cases of the omicron variant have been confirmed in Durham County. In response, Duke University is requiring all of its faculty, students and staff to get the COVID-19 booster shot. (abc11)
- One man was critically injured and later passed after a shooting on Sunday evening. The incident occurred near a convenience store at the corner of Morning Glory an Alston avenues. Police have not released any additional information in the active investigation. (CBS17)
- Another shooting occurred on Sunday afternoon at the Streets at Southpoint. Police responded to reports of a suspicious person with a weapon and shots fired at around 2:15 pm. The incident did not appear to be random and marks the third shooting at the mall in this month. (abc11)
- RDU has already seen an increase in travelers, with an estimate of 500,000 travelers between Monday and New Year's Day. The airport has said it will have more law enforcement present and more signs to direct drivers to parking. Health experts warn of the risks and encourage testing prior to travel. (WRAL)
- The City of Durham will collect your live Christmas trees beginning January 3rd until February 4th along with your regularly scheduled waste collection. It is also providing seven locations to drop off trees. Trees must be cut in half if larger than 6 feet and be free from decorations and hardware in order to be collected. (Bull City Today)
