Organ Transplants + New Laws Take Effect + ABC Questions

Here's the latest edition the Durham Daily! This is your source for everything going on in town.

Good morning, neighbors! It's me again, Christina Fullford, your host of the Durham Daily.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and nice. High: 78 Low: 55.

Here are the top stories today in Durham:

  1. The COVID-19 pandemic has had far reaching effects. Doctors and scientists have been challenged to figure out all of the complexities in real-time through the surges. Dr. Cameron Wolfe at Duke Health has been specializing in transplant-related infectious diseases. Doctors have to be extra careful identifying a cause of death before allowing organs to be donated and are still determining the safety of using COVID infected donor's organs. (WNCT9)
  2. The Durham VA is working to help veterans fight against COVID-19. The veterans agency is organizing a "blitz" to provide booster shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine from 8:00 am to noon on Saturday October 2 at the Durham Medical Center. (Spectrum News 1)
  3. The ongoing liquor shortages at local Alcoholic Beverage Control stores have prompted NC lawmakers to question the top state ABC official and distribution contractor. The House ABC committee chairman, Tim Moffitt, was leading the discussion and said that the hearing left more questions than answers. The meeting occurred less than two weeks after ABC Commission chairman A.D. "Zander" Guy resigned citing the liquor supply troubles as a factor in his resignation. (HeraldSun)
  4. 30 new laws take effect today in North Carolina. Legislation approved earlier this year includes several criminal justice reform provisions, mandatory clergy hospital visitation, child welfare procedure reworks, allowing Sunday bottled liquor sales by distilleries, and more. (HeraldSun)
  5. Matthew Moore is home with family, three months after becoming the first in the nation to receive a new-generation artificial heart at Duke Hospital. The artificial heart is designed to keep him going until he is able to receive a transplant and after multiple incidents of his heart stopping and 45 minutes of being "technically dead," the family is grateful for the new technology.
