Here are the top stories in Durham today:
- Durham's new police chief Patrice Andrews has plans for the city. One of her top priorities is addressing the gun violence in the city. She expressed that the police department will need help from city leaders and the community. She is also looking to fill the 70 vacant positions among the police department, and is looking for ways to retain officers and boost morale. (CBS17)
- Durham City leaders are discussing ways to improve the city's environmental impact. One of the things they are seriously considering is implementing a $0.10 charge on all single-use plastic shopping bags. The proposal first came up in 2019, with shoppers hesitant about it. The fee is intended to encourage shoppers to bring reusable bags, and Don't Waste Durham said it costs Durham nearly $87,000 annually to recycle waste caused by plastic bags. (abc11)
- BioSkyrb Genomics, Inc. has announced that it will be relocating and expanding its corporate headquarters and research center in Durham. BioSkyrb says that moving into the larger, more modern space represents its growth and plans to continue expansion of the team. The company develops single-cell whole genome amplification tools and intends to double its current work force with a total of 50 highly-skilled professionals by next year. (StreetInsider)
- Cottman Transmission in Durham stepped in to help a family in need. They were staying with their son at the Ronald McDonald House in order to receive his treatments for Baraitser-Winter Syndrome, when their van broke down. The family's son needed the van due to his wheelchair and accessibility needs, so Cottman Transmission went above and beyond to help. It transported the family back to the Ronald McDonald House, towed their van, and called around to find the necessary part. (abc11)
- Durham Technical Community College kicked off its 60th anniversary celebration with the dedication of the new William G. Ingram Center for Applied Learning and Technology. This is the first new academic building on the main campus in 15 years. The building is 40,000 square foot and includes 11 labs, 5 classrooms, study rooms, storage rooms, and a multipurpose room.
