🌱Primary Pushback + Durham Pilot Program Guarantees Basic Income

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Durham.

Happy Museum Selfie Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Sunshine giving way to clouds. High: 52 Low: 40.

Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. North Carolina Republican legislators announced plans on Monday to vote on a bill that would push the May 17 primary to June 7. With the state Supreme Court leaving little time to redraw maps in the event of a strike down, GOP leaders are moving to push back thereby extending the window of time to redraw maps. If the bill passes, the timeframe could eliminate primary runoff elections this year. (WCNC)
  2. Triangle Restaurant Week is set to return for the winter season. Although labor shortages and increased meat prices have led to less participation or price increases, the event will run from January 24-30 and include lunch and dinner options. (abc11)
  3. Thousands of books were collected during the annual Dream Big book drive put on by Book Harvest. This year 84 people signed up to host their own individual drives leading up to the event, and on Monday they were all delivered to be sent to children in the community. In honor of Dr. King's birthday, all kids in attendance got free backpacks full of books. (CBS17)
  4. In less than two weeks, Durham's Excel pilot program will begin providing guaranteed basic income to 129 formerly incarcerated individuals. The nonprofit StepUp Durham will manage the program. The organization received 340 responses and over the next week and a half they will select people at random to receive the aid. (CBS17)
  5. It took firefighters, tow trucks, and crane operators and specialized trucks to get the tractor trailer off of Highway 147. Owner of Lee's Towing speculated that had the trailer been full, it would likely have crushed the cab when it fell. The driver was coherent after the crash and has been recovering in the hospital.
