🌱 RDU Landing Slip + Accidents Increase + Amicus Brief Filed

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Durham.

Happy National Handwriting Day Durham!

Just a heads up friends, the weather left my internet connection pretty spotty. I have all the most important updates included, but you may notice some areas are a little lighter than normal. I hope you are enjoying staying up-to-date with me, and thanks for your understanding!

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny. High: 44 Low: 27.

Here are the top four stories in Durham today:

  1. The main runway at RDU was closed for more than 16 hours after a passenger jet skidded off the runway. Around 9:00 pm the flight landed safely, but while taxiing off it rolled into the mud. There were 19 passengers on board and all were able to make it off safe. (CBS17)
  2. Although the snow created a beautiful scene across central North Carolina, it also caused a sharp increase in car accidents across the area. It appears as though none of the accidents have been fatal, but officials are emphasizing that if you need to travel, give yourself extra time to drive slowly and carefully. (WRAL, WBTW, abc11)
  3. In spite of icy road conditions, people made it out to downtown to enjoy the snowfall as it started. The city of Durham had pre-treated many of the primary roads and bridges and the city has a total of 24 trucks with plows and spreaders working 12 hour shifts to try and make the roads safe. (CBS17)
  4. Governor Roy Cooper and Attorney General Josh Stein filed an amicus brief in two cases urging the Supreme Court to ensure fair state elections. Governor Cooper stated in a press release that "The trial court recognized what has been obvious all along, that the legislative and congressional maps were intentionally gerrymandered." (FOX Carolina)

Today in Durham:

From my notebook:

  • It's National Handwriting Day and if you're still snowed in, its the perfect time to write a letter to a loved one. You can even order stamps online, then send them off.
  • If the snow sticks around, check out the best spots to go sledding in the Triangle. (WRAL)
  • ABC's Chopper 11 captured aerial views of the Saturday Snow to show us all a bird's eye view. (abc11)

Alrighty, you're all caught up for today! See you tomorrow for another update.
