Here are the top stories today in Durham:
- North Carolina Rep. David Price of the Fourth District has announced that he will be retiring at the end of his current term. The congressman was first elected in 1987, and will serve until December 2022. Price's district included Durham, Franklin, Granville, Orange, and parts of Chatham, Wake, and Vance counties. (WAVY)
- Duke University has received a $7.5 million grant from the US Department of Energy to assess the risks of offshore wind energy development along the east coast. Federal agencies have set a goal of boosting US offshore wind energy production to 30 gigawatts by 2030, but are concerned the risks it may pose to birds, bats, and other marine mammals. (Duke News)
- A pedestrian is suffering serious injuries after being hit by a vehicle in Durham on Sunday night. The pedestrian was taken from the scene of the accident at Hebron Road to a nearby hospital. No other details have been released. (CBS17)
- Duke Student Government's Durham Community Affairs Committee met virtually Saturday afternoon to discuss project proposals for the upcoming year. One proposal regarded creating a website, "Popping the Duke Bubble," that would provide Duke students with easy access to information about Durham restaurants, service opportunities, community events, and history. They also spoke about reviving the free bus, the Bull City Connector, expanding food points to nearby eateries, and other projects to engage students in the community. (Duke Chronicle)
- Superior Court Judge David Lee scheduled a court hearing for Monday in the Leandro school funding case. Judge Lee want's an update on why the funding roadmap he endorsed has not been carried out as of yet. Lee expressed last month that he was prepared to issue "judicial remedies" if he hadn't seen action, but GOP lawmakers disagree with Lee forcing the General Assembly to spend certain levels of money. (Spectrum News 1)
