Happy April Fools' Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny. High: 62 Low: 36.

Here are the top five stories today in Durham:

  1. Residents who live on 31 sections of unpaved roads through the city will soon get to travel on freshly paved streets. Durham currently has 192 unpaved road sections, and after a 2019 study assessing the condition of the roads and approval of a 10-year expenditure the project is under way. More information can be found here. (Bull City Today)
  2. Police are investigating an overnight shooting that left one injured at McDougald Terrace on Thursday. Officers responded just after midnight, and are looking for the person who shot the man. The victim of the shooting ran behind a home in the community where an ambulance picked him up. (WRAL)
  3. Durham County deputies arrested a woman for a Tuesday night shooting that left another woman injured. The two women had been involved in an argument and Jameiah Michell Burton shot the other in the back. Burton remained at the scene and is facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injuries. (CBS17)
  4. Construction has begun on North Carolina's Freedom Park. The park features a design by the late Durham architect Phil Freelon and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022. The Holt Brothers Construction is leading the project that they say is "one of the most important projects we do." The project members on the Freedom Park Board have been working toward the park for 20 years. (Spectrum News 1)
  5. A North Carolina poultry farm has been forced to euthanize around 32,000 turkeys as a preventative measure after a sample of the flock tested positive for high path avian influenza. The turkeys tested positive first at a diagnostic lab in N.C. and then again in a National Veterinary Services Lab in Iowa. According to USDA, the bird flu has been confirmed across several states and is devastating poultry farmers. (USA Today)
