Happy National Bagel Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Increasing clouds and colder. High: 39 Low: 21.

Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. Hospitals and EMS are encouraging the public to avoid emergency departments in non-life-threatening situations as increasing COVID cases are putting a strain on the healthcare system. About a half dozen emergency responders have been out sick within the last few weeks, with more staff testing positive or being exposed than in the last 5-7 months. (WRAL)
  2. In 2021, the Durham CrimeStoppers received 300 tips that helped lead to dozens of arrests. Durham police say that one of the challenges they have faced in solving some of the violent crime in the city is a lack of community members coming forward with information. With the CrimeStoppers tip-line, people can remain completely anonymous when sharing information. (CBS17)
  3. A warrant initiated by the State Bureau of Investigations regarding Charles Walker Piquet, the man who was killed by police officers in a Circle K, revealed that Piquet used a glass bottle while attacking the store clerk. Initially police received a call from the clerk Camara Turner stating that Piquet had cut open his own neck with a glass bottle. The warrant also states that officers gave Piquet commands before firing shots at him, and officers did try to aid Piquet after the shooting, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. (WRAL)
  4. Staff at Public Hardware Inc. are warning residents to get supplies ahead of the anticipated storms. Manager Lauren Rathbone says it will extend hours this weekend if the weather gets bad. She is reminded of the 2002 ice storm where it was one of the only businesses open. (Spectrum News 1)
  5. With at-home COVID-19 tests growing in popularity, if you intend to purchase one there are some specifications you will need to know beforehand. OSHA says that in order for a test result to be valid, the specimen must be processed in a laboratory, be a proctored over the counter test, or be done where the collection and processing is observed by an employer. (CBS17) Beginning today, health insurance companies will be required to reimburse people for purchasing at-home tests, but you should check with your insurance company before purchasing to find out if your provider has a preferred vendor. (CBS17)
