Happy Groundhog Day Durham!
First, today's weather:
Increasing cloudiness. High: 62 Low: 51.
Here are the top five stories in Durham today:
- Seven Durham students were taken to the hospital for observation after a car collided with a school bus on Monday afternoon. The bus had 15 children on it after leaving Lucas Middle School. The seven students were not seriously injured but were taken to the hospital as a precaution. (CBS17)
- Police are asking for public help identifying the owner of a dark blue or black SUV that hit a woman who was standing on a sidewalk early Monday morning. The crash happened around 1:30 am and left the victim seriously injured. Police do not believe the injuries will be life-threatening, and anyone with information is asked to contact investigators or CrimeStoppers. (CBS17)
- Arguments in the North Carolina redistricting case are set to being today, and the three justices who have received calls for recusal will not be stepping aside. Associate Justices Anita Earls, Sam Ervin IV, and Phil Berger Jr. denied the motions on Monday, meaning all seven justices will likely listen to the oral arguments and decide on the case. (WCNC)
- Applications opened Monday for the North Carolina Homeowner Assistance Fund. It's been nearly a year since Congress approved the funds, and now homeowners can seek help making mortgage payments, catching up on past-due bills, or other housing-related costs. In Durham County approximately 19% of households are struggling to meet their mortgage payments and can now apply online. (WRAL)
- Saint James Seafood is reopening today after three years of various circumstances have kept them closed. The restaurant had to close in April, 2019 after a deadly explosion occurred a few hundred feet away. The restaurant reopened in January 2020, but had to close due to the pandemic. They tried to reopen for takeout service in July 2020, but ended that service in December 2020. Owner Matt Kelly is excited to reopen and hopes that Durham residents will provide support to him and many other Durham restaurants. (WRAL)
