Happy National Curried Chicken Day Durham!
First, today's weather:
Partly sunny. High: 49 Low: 27.
Here are the top five stories in Durham today:
- Durham leaders announced some of the precautions they are taking to protect against the omicron variant. A delivery of 60,000 high quality masks, will be delivered to local health departments and school districts. Durham is also opening two new testing sites and officials have ordered 8,800 home tests. (WRAL)
- Nearly 1/3 of Durham school bus drivers were unavailable to work on Monday, many in protest as they hadn't been paid. According to Durham Public Schools, some employees did not receive their paychecks via direct deposit on Friday due to SunTrust bank changing names. DPS offered drivers $100 gift cards and support while the issues were being resolved. (WRAL)
- The Accordion Club of Durham has gained popularity in a uniquely Durham way. The club opened in 2017 and in July, an Instagram account was created on behalf of one of the bathrooms. Now each of the two bathroom's have their own social media presence independent from ownership, and a "sibling rivalry" that has garnered a following. (Eater Carolinas)
- The deadline for longtime, low-income homeowners to apply for assistance with 2021 taxes is approaching. The deadline has been extended to January 31, and if you qualify, Durham County and City governments could help pay half of your 2021 tax bill. (Council Member Javiera Caballero Facebook)
- The North Carolina Supreme Court could end up deciding the fate of the $1.7 billion Leandro transfer. After the Court of Appeals blocked enforcement of State Superior Court Judge David Lee's order, plaintiffs in the case filed an appeal on December 15. GOP legislative leaders have filed their own intervention in the case stating that Lee's order "contravenes the doctrine of Separation of Powers." (Laurinburg Exchange)
