Happy National Cherish an Antique Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Mostly cloudy. High: 56 Low: 38.

Here are the top five stories today in Durham:

  1. Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead will be hosting a gun buyback event today from 2:00pm-6:00pm. The event is part of the City of Durham's larger efforts to reduce the amount of guns in neighborhoods. The county will purchase long guns for $100, handguns for $150, and assault rifles for $200. Any guns that are found to be stolen will be returned to their lawful owner. (CBS17)
  2. Dozens of police responded to a shooting on Thursday afternoon. When police arrived, Emily Montes de Oca was pronounced dead at the scene, and another man was transported to the hospital to be treated with serious injuries. Police say that Erick Ray Hudson barricaded himself into an apartment and refused to come out for nearly 8 hours. Members of DPD's Selective Enforcement Team entered the apartment around 10:30 pm and took Hudson into custody. (WRAL)
  3. A Durham road had to be closed for several hours on Friday afternoon after a crash took down power lines. Durham police said that the crash happened along Guess Road at 12:40 pm. The road had to be closed between Carver Street and North Pointe Drive. It is unclear how many vehicles were involved in the crash or if anyone was injured. (CBS17)
  4. Students at Northern High School in Durham watched live as the Senate confirmed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the United States Supreme Court. American History teacher Margaret Mary Mills-Thomason said that "it's really inspiring for students to understand that history is not just a bunch of old dead people … but instead history is happening now." Students watched the moment live and got to discuss the moment with their teacher as they witnessed history. (abc11)
