The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Durham.

Happy Undergraduate Research Week Durham!

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny; breezy, warmer. High: 59 Low: 37.

Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. Durham Mayor Elaine O'Neal gave her first State of the City address Monday night. The State of the City address gave O'Neal the opportunity to outline her goals for the coming year and outline the city's methods of addressing things in Durham. (WRAL) On Friday, O'Neal hinted at the tone of her message saying, "We can't police this away; we can't arrest it away." (abc11)
  2. The four-day Raleigh-Durham Startup Week kicks off today. The inaugural event from Techstar will include a variety of successful startup owners in the Triangle, and offer investor "office hours." (WRAL TechWire)
  3. For at least one Durham Church this Easter was an extra special celebration. World Overcomers Christian Church held its first in-person Easter service since the start of the pandemic. Pastor Andy Thompson says that "It is a new beginning for us. It's a new beginning for the church." (WRAL)
  4. Durham's Eno River Force Main Relocation project is set to begin soon, as part of the Durham Saves Water initiative. The force main pipe developed a large hole due to internal corrosion in 2017. In order to address the affected pipeline, the project will install approximately 4,500 feet of new pipe near the existing pipe. (Bull City Today Facebook)
  5. Changes to the North Carolina tax laws could impact last minute filers this year. The new tax law will no longer require military personnel to pay taxes on retirement benefits. Another change will increase the child tax credit deduction by $500 per child. The standard deduction will also increase, which tax experts say will provide the most relief for low-income households.
