Happy National Spanish Paella Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and cool. High: 53 Low: 29.

Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. Just before 9:00 pm on Friday night, a car smashed through the front of the Stop One Food Mart & Tobacco Shop on N. Miami Boulevard. Photos showed a small white sedan completely inside of the store after the crash. One person was playing a slot machine in the store when the crash occurred, and in spite of being pinned by the car briefly, was uninjured. (CBS17)
  2. Witnesses at the McDougald Terrace Apartment Complex reported at least 30 gunshots in an overnight shooting. Police are investigating the incident that happened just before 1:00 am on Saturday, and have not said what led up to the shooting, or if anyone was injured. (CBS17)
  3. After weeks of travel, Ukrainian refugees arrived in Durham on Friday. On Thursday, President J0e Biden said that the United States would accept up to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees into the United States. Hours after the announcement, Vasylyna Haushkevych and others were at the Mexican border and entered the U.S. (Spectrum News 1)
  4. The North Carolina unemployment rate fell to 3.7% in February. In January, the unemployment rate was at 3.9%, and December at 4.1%. The steady decline has taken place since September 2020. The 3.7% figure is significant, because according to Governor Roy Cooper's office, the state's economy has recovered to pre-pandemic employment levels. (Spectrum News 1)
  5. Tonight marks the 94th Oscars, and Durham native Janora McDuffie will be announcing the awards. McDuffie is an accomplished actress who has landed many roles, and is excited to infuse her southern charm into Oscar night. (6abc)

Today in Durham:

From my notebook:

  • I don't know about you all but I love paella, and for National Spanish Paella Day, the best I have found is right out by RDU at Carmen's Cuban Café & Lounge. If you know of better, let me know because I will have to taste for myself.
  • You may see a new spider around this year, but the joro spider is not harmful to humans or pets. (CBS17)
  • 21 people applied to feel the Durham City Council vacancy. (Sarah Krueger Twitter)
