Happy National Drink Wine Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Breezy; colder in the p.m.. High: 64 Low: 28.

Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. North Carolina tax filing has been pushed back to February 28. The tax season has been pushed back due to the budget delays that included tax changes that impact this year's filings. The department says that if taxpayers file electronically, they can expect to begin receiving refunds in April. (WSOC-TV)
  2. The North Carolina House of Representatives has reached an agreement on the new district maps. The House map passed 115-5, but the North Carolina Senate is finding the task much more difficult. Republicans and Democrats in the Senate appear to be less aligned on the collaborative efforts while drafting maps. Today a lower Wake County court will choose the map to be used in upcoming elections. (CBS17)
  3. Durham's police chief and district attorney came together to take questions on Wednesday night from residents who are anxious about the rise in gun violence. Durham's Mayor Pro-tem Mark-Anthony Middleton pointed to the city's widening wealth gap as a major source of concern in the violence. Durham County DA Satana Deberry outlined some of the priorities for her department and an update on the office's post-arrest diversion program. (abc11)
  4. A rally was held outside of an Amazon warehouse to demand the reinstatement of Universal masking and other COVID-19 protocols. Activists, former employees, and local union members with the Southern Workers Assembly were among those gathered in one of many demonstrations across the state. The North Carolina Department of Labor has received thousands of COVID related complaints over the past few years, and more workers are turning to unions to help negotiate workplace changes. (CBS17)
  5. Durham residents should prepare for nightly closures of a portion of U.S. 70 as part of the East End Connector project. Demolition of a temporary bridge over U.S. 70 will close lanes between 9:00 pm and 6:00 am from now until March. After the bridge is demolished, NCDOT will place the connector's final driving surface and lane markings. (abc11)
