Happy National Cookie Exchange Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Turning sunny; milder. High: 52 Low: 23.

Here are the top stories in Durham today:

  1. Residents of Braswell Properties have come together and issued a list of demands as the deadline for eviction looms. The community presented six demands including more time to move, as well as reimbursements and moving costs to be paid out by the previous owner. Trinity Ave Presbyterian Church has also created a community fund to help support relocation expenses, but with the strain on affordable housing in the Triangle, residents fear their circumstances in the coming days. (abc11)
  2. At the beginning of 2022, Durham police will begin sending officers in specialized units to help patrol the city. Out of 81 vacancies among officers, 67 of those are patrol officer positions. This push will add four officers to each patrol shift, but will exclude homicide investigators so they can continue to focus on closing open homicide cases. (CBS17)
  3. A Virginia bank teller pled guilty on Monday after using his position to steal money and traffic drugs into Durham. Jorge Omar Navarro admitted to the federal charges. Investigations revealed he had been selling drugs in Durham since the beginning of 2021, and he now faces a minimum of 10 years in prison with a maximum penalty of life. (WRAL)
  4. Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard's westbound lanes were all closed for more than six hours on Monday after a vehicle crashed and flipped over. The driver of the vehicle was alone and pronounced dead at the scene. The roads reopened just after 6:30am, and the wreck remains under investigation. (CBS17)
  5. Durham was awarded a $9 million federal RAISE Grant to construct the Durham Belt Line Trail. The path will be a shared use path and linear park in a former railroad right-of-way. (City of Durham NC)
