Happy National Gourmet Coffee Day Durham!
First, today's weather:
Mostly sunny and chilly. High: 43 Low: 28.
Here are the top five stories today in Durham:
- NC IDEA and leadership of the North Carolina Black Entrepreneurship Council (NC BEC) announced that the organization has awarded $525,000 in Growth Grants to seven Black-founded former NC IDEA SEED grant recipients. Inspired by the accomplishments and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the organization hopes to help accelerate growth of the businesses while inspiring other minority founders to follow in their footsteps. (TechWire)
- Late on Sunday afternoon, a tractor-trailer slid off of the N.C. Highway 147 bridge in Durham. The trailer was empty as the driver was on his way to an Amazon facility. The cab of the trailer was upright as the trailer landed vertically off the bridge. The driver was taken to the hospital and is expected to be ok. (WRAL)
- Many travelers have been left stranded at RDU as winter weather continued causing cancellations well into Monday. One passenger had three different flights cancelled trying to fly to New York City. The airport tweeted that it was working to clear roads and runways and urged guests to contact their airlines before arriving for their flights. (abc11)
- North Carolina alcohol distributors are being trained to spot human trafficking. When distributors drop off shipments, they get access to parts of restaurants, clubs, and convenience stores that the general public doesn't see. Members of the North Carolina Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association are being trained to look out for red flags that could signal someone being trafficked. (WNCT9)
- There's a chance for more winter weather across central N.C. by the end of the week. It is still too early to determine exactly where the location of the low pressure will end up, but there is a good chance that it could lead to another round of winter weather Thursday. (CBS17)
Doing a "Dry January" or just looking for a flavorful alternative to regular cocktails? Here's a suggestion: try a non-alcoholic drink from our partners at Betera. Created by an award-winning chef from natural botanicals, Betera's drinks come in 3 flavors — Ginger-Orange, Elderflower-Lime and Rhubarb-Hibiscus. We tried Ginger-Orange, and it was excellent — lightly effervescent, floral with a hint of bitterness and the sippability of a cocktail.
Betera is offering readers of the Daily a 15% discount on their first order: use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — you can try Betera here.
