Happy Purim Durham!
First, today's weather:
Showers late in the afternoon. High: 68 Low: 55.
Here are the top five stories in Durham today:
- Durham is one of three cities in North Carolina that will receive federal funding to perform upgrades on the public transit system. The Federal Transit Administration will provide the funding as part of an infrastructure grant to modernize and electrify bus systems. The money can only be used for transportation infrastructure such as buses, buildings, and shelters. (abc11)
- City and county officials are investigating after it took 19 minutes for a fire engine to locate a home fire that had deadly consequence. The fire was reported around 6:00 am, and when firefighters arrived, flames were visible from the wood frame of the house. Multiple departments responded to the call that came in at 6:02 am, but none were on the scene until 6:21 am. The delay was caused by an address miscommunication, and upon initial review, all procedures were followed appropriately. (CBS17)
- Durham Police are investigating a shooting at McDougald Terrace that took place on Monday. One man had serious injuries and was transported to the hospital. The case is under investigation and if anyone has information, they are asked to contact CrimeStoppers. (abc11)
- The Durham Police Department is morning the loss of retired K9 officer Daro. K9 Daro survived a shooting in the line of duty last year, but was later diagnosed with cancer. Durham police Chief Patrice Andrews awarded Daro with the Purple Heart on Friday. (CBS17)
- One Durham restaurant is receiving recognition in a major way. Alley Twenty Six is the first North Carolina restaurant to be nominated for the Outstanding Bar Program Award. The craft cocktail bar was also nominated as a semi-finalist for a James Beard Award. The location has been open since 2012 and has received multiple local awards, but owner Shannon Healy says "this is a different league." (Spectrum News 1)
