Here are the top five stories today in Durham:
- It's been a year since Durham Police pointed guns at three young Black boys who were playing tag at the Rochelle Manor apartments, and families are still waiting. Makeba Hoffler is speaking out as the incident involving her then 8-year-old son, as she has yet to see any change, and has not gotten any insight or remorse around the incident. Her son, Zakarryya is still affected by the incident, and Hoffler is calling for officers to be punished more severely, and the city to provide more resources to kids like hers. (INDY Week)
- RDU is scrambling to restock de-icing supplies after a plane slid off the runway during las weeks storm. With snow a small possibility this weekend, RDU is trying to ensure there is enough stock of deicer to keep all ramps and runways safe for air travel. The airport authority board approved $241,770 in an emergency meeting to purchase additional supplies. (abc11)
- North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein has announced a lawsuit against Articul8 and its owner Paul K. Talbot for allegedly violating the Telemarketing Sales Rule. The Texas-based telephone service provider is accused of facilitating illegal and fraudulent telemarketing calls. Telemarketers are unable to inundate phones with robocalls without complicit phone companies, and Stein's lawsuit alleges that since 2015 Articul8 has allowed domestic and international scammers to route calls to U.S. customers. - North Carolina is gearing up to meet the demand of tech food companies that will bring more than 5,000 new jobs to the state. Rick Lawless, the development director for the North Carolina Biotechnology Center says that many candidates for biomanufacturing jobs have limited knowledge of biology, chemistry, and regulations. He emphasizes that the workforce development projects must reach out to new populations and provide appropriate training opportunities. (TechWire)
- The Durham City Council is one step closer to determining which local proposed projects should receive American Rescue Plan Act funds. The city will receive nearly $52 million from the act to help offset revenue losses and fund community needs. $7.3 million has already been approved to pay hazard pay to employees, and the council is now voting on 71 qualifying proposals out of 80 that were submitted to distribute the remaining funds.
