Here are the top stories in Durham today:

  1. Many tenants have fallen behind on rent and are turning to rental assistance programs, but one landlord will not sign for the program. 160+ tenants of Soles have applied for emergency pandemic rental assistance from Durham County, but Soles says," I want you to tell me a dollar amount. Show me the numbers and then I'll sign on." (abc11)
  2. A fire broke out at 5 Star Tobacco & Vapes in Durham overnight on Friday. The business on Holloway Street had crews arrive just after 2:30 am, and they were able to put the fire out. The investigation is ongoing at this time, and no injuries were reported. (CBS17)
  3. More than 700 veterans received their coronavirus booster shot at the Durham Medical Center on Saturday. A hundred Durham VA employees were also vaccinated at the event, and coordinator Genevieve Embree says people were excited to come and get their booster shot. (WRAL)
  4. Over the weekend there were several shootings in Durham. On Friday night a vehicle drove onto the grass at the Northern High School homecoming game, and one parent estimated 10 to 15 shots fired into the air with at least one striking a 17-year-old boy in the leg. (CBS17, WRAL) On Saturday there were two incidents. One left a man in his early 30s dead, and later that night a woman was wounded with non-life threatening injuries in a drive-by shooting with several shots fired. (CBS17) One mother whose son was wounded by a stray bullet is pressuring leaders to take action while dealing with the aftermath of her son's injury. (CBS17)
  5. Governor Cooper has ordered all US and NC flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff in honor of fallen firefighters. Today is recognized as National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day, and Public Law 107-51 mandates that from sunrise to sunset on October 4, flags are to be lowered in recognition of those lost in the line of duty. Individuals, schools, businesses, municipalities, and other organizations are encouraged to lower their flags for the holiday as well.
