Here are the top stories in Durham today:

  1. Durham residents gathered for the 29th Annual Vigil Against Violence on Saturday. Gun violence in Durham is up 30% for 2021, and a quilt was on display that held the names of 900 lives lost to the city's violence. (CBS17)
  2. Durham County's percentage of positive COVID-19 tests has dipped below 5%, falling to 3.1%. 5% has been set as the benchmark for low transmission and with the county even lower, residents are questioning if local officials will loosen restrictions. (abc11)
  3. Durham activists are preparing to open a youth community center downtown. The site's owners are allowing use of the space for free, but the center is still in need of donations and volunteers. (CBS17)
  4. The Duke Baseball team concluded its fall exhibition schedule on Friday with it's 12-inning game against NC State. The game was not scored, but individual players stats were kept. (GoDuke)
  5. Unemployment rates have been steadily dropping with September's rate falling to 4.2%, however the labor force participation has still remained low. (CBS17) As the hospitality industry is struggling to fill positions, it is creating additional incentives for employees. Some locations have begun offering college tuition reimbursement, paid sick leave, and 401(k) retirement plans. (WRAL)
