🌱Wendy's Armed Robbery + Reporting Potholes + School Choice Week
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Durham.

Happy National Plan for Vacation Day Durham!
First, today's weather:
Increasing cloudiness. High: 54 Low: 31.
Here are the top five stories in Durham today:
- Police are searching for two men who were armed and demanded money from a Wendy's drive-thru on Sunday night. Officers responded to the restaurant around 8:00 pm. The vehicle was described as a black SUV with two men in black ski masks. (WRAL)
- A section of Cheek Road was closed near Hardee Street after a crash injured two people and downed power lines. According to police the vehicle ran off the road and hit a pot hole. Two men were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. It is unclear if the wreck was caused by winter weather. (CBS17)
- With winter weather leaving snow and ice on roads, the risk for new potholes is increased. As water seeps into pavement cracks and expands when frozen, the cracks can cause the pavement to break leading to potholes. If you notice any prevalent potholes in the area, you can report it to NCDOT to request repairs or property damage claims. (NCDOT)
- For the first time since taking office, Governor Roy Cooper has proclaimed the North Carolina School Choice Week. Governor Cooper has been notably against expanding charter schools in North Carolina and this is the first time he has elected to declare the week although the North Carolina Association for Public Charter Schools has asked him every year that he has been in office. The week coincides with National School Choice Week. (Spectrum News 1)
- A Durham entrepreneur is using his brand, Good Steward Apparel to counter a "culture of cruelty and shame." Alvin Howard is also a housing specialist for Carolina Outreach, a Durham-based health services company. His brand gives 10% of its earnings to local nonprofit mentorship program, Young Men 4 Christ, and made reusable masks to donate to health care organizations at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week, we told you about our new favorite non-alcoholic go-to — the refreshingly bitter drinks from our partners at Betera. They're chef-created from natural botanicals, lightly effervescent and worthy of life beyond "Dry January." We mentioned that their Ginger-Orange was excellent; we've since tried Elderflower-Lime and loved it as well — light and floral with the perfect amount of zing. We're converts.
Enough of you took Betera up on their 15% discount on first orders for Patch Daily readers that they've extended the offer for another week. Use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — try Betera here.
