• 2 homes gutted in Emerald Isle fire; massive explosion seen for miles at NC coast (myfox8.com) — A massive weekend fire on Emerald Isle destroyed two neighboring homes on Ocean Drive and damaged at least three others, with a dramatic explosion visible for miles along the coast. Multiple Carteret County fire departments responded, Ocean Drive was closed, and officials report no injuries as they continue to assess damage on the western end of Bogue Banks. 
• Crystal Coast volunteers documented a rare genetic mystery during sea turtle nest excavation in Emerald Isle (publicradioeast.org) — Emerald Isle's Sea Turtle Patrol recently documented a rare genetic deformity while excavating Nest 39, where most hatchlings still made it safely to the ocean. Volunteers found every remaining egg had unusual shell strings, which state biologists linked to an uncommon ovarian issue only seen a few times in North Carolina history.
