State Treasurer Janet Cowell to Address Eastern NC Business Leaders on the Economy and Education
Treasurer Cowell First Speaker in New Series Hosted by the Eastern Carolina Economic Club

The Eastern Carolina Economic Club (ECEC), is proud to welcome NC State Treasurer Janet Cowell to the New Bern Convention Center on September 23, 2015 as the first speaker in the organization’s Women’s Leadership Speaker Series. Treasure Cowell, called by Forbes magazine the state’s most powerful elected official, will address issues related to the state’s economy, education and women in the workplace.
“This is an unprecedented event, giving business leaders from all of Eastern North Carolina access to one of the most influential power players in our state,” says Christine Meyers Moore, Founder and Chair of ECEC. “One of the goals of ECEC is to give influential women in business a platform to educate and share strategic insights to success. Nothing could epitomize this goal more than hosting the first female to ever hold the office of State Treasurer.”
With over 20 years of private and public-sector financial leadership, Cowell oversees more than 90 billion dollars in pension investments for the more than 900,000 of the State’s teachers, firefighters, and public employees. NC’s pension funds rank second in the nation. While many public plans are struggling to meet financial obligations, North Carolina’s pension system is ranked 2nd in the nation. North Carolina is one of only nine states in the country to earn an AAA bond rating by all three rating agencies – the ultimate good housekeeping seal of approval for fiscal strength.
Treasurer Cowell oversees the state’s banking industry and successfully uses her position on the state Board of Education to add financial literacy to the school curriculum. She has also launched two innovation funds totaling almost half a billion dollars to improve access to capital for start-ups, entrepreneurs and businesses, as well as tackled health care with a pilot program to improve patient experience while lowering costs.
