'I'm leaving fulfilled': Greenville police chief reflects on career before retirement (witn.com) — Greenville's longtime police chief Richard Tyndall has retired after more than 24 years with the department, handing the reins to Deputy Chief K.Z. Thomas, who becomes the city's first woman and first African American woman chief. Tyndall reflects warmly on serving his hometown, credits his team for lower crime and officer wellness, and says he's confident the department is in good hands as he steps into retirement.

Jury convicts Best of second-degree murder and felon firearm charge in 2023 death (wcti12.com) — A Pitt County jury has convicted Tyrell Best of second-degree murder and a felon-in-possession firearm charge in the 2023 killing of Antonio Bond after Greenville police found Bond's body near Tyson and Battle streets. Best received life without parole plus an additional active sentence after prosecutors successfully pursued habitual and violent habitual felon enhancements.
   

3. Thursday night football: Eastern Carolina teams open season with big wins (wcti12.com) — J.H. Rose's home win in Greenville over Northern Nash headlined a busy Thursday of rescheduled high school football openers across Eastern North Carolina. Several nearby schools, from Greene Central to Topsail and Pamlico County, also kicked off their seasons early due to forecasted weather, with some avenging last year's losses and one snapping a long losing streak.
   

4. ECU Health marks 50 years of residency and fellowship programs (witn.com) — ECU Health in Greenville is marking 50 years of residency and fellowship training, highlighting how its programs have grown from a single family medicine residency to more than 30 specialties. Leaders say the Brody School of Medicine's expansion and new facility will help train more doctors and extend better care from Greenville into rural communities across eastern North Carolina.
