Roads, Schools To Close For Funeral Procession Of Slain Officer

MOORESVILLE, NC — Drivers in Mooresville and throughout the Interstate 77 corridor in the Lake Norman region should expect travel delays and road closures Friday due to the funeral procession for Mooresville K9 Officer Jordan Sheldon.
The procession is expected to include up to 2,500 emergency vehicles and stretch about 15 miles long.
Sheldon, 32, was fatally shot by a suspect identified as Michael Yovany Aldana, 28, of Mooresville during what police described as a "routine traffic stop" along West Plaza Drive around 10 p.m. May 4. Aldana fled the scene but was later found dead in a nearby apartment with what MPD described as a self-inflicted wound.

Sheldon was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte but was later pronounced dead from his injuries. He had served with MPD for six years.
Funeral services for Sheldon will begin at 11 a.m. at Calvary Church in Charlotte, located at 5801 Pineville-Matthews Road. A procession of public safety vehicles will leave from the funeral home in Concord to the church in Charlotte for the service. Following the service, a procession will travel to Mooresville Police Department, where the procession will disband, MPD said.

Procession Route from Calvary Church in Charlotte:
- Leave Calvary Church at approximately 1:00 to 1:30
- Turn right onto Rea Road to Interstate 485 Outer Loop
- Merge onto Interstate 485 Outer Loop
- Travel Interstate 485 to Interstate 77 North
- Travel Interstate 77 North to Exit 33
- Turn right on US 21 North toward Mooresville
- Turn right onto Waterlynn Road toward NC 115
- Turn Left onto NC 115 toward Main Street, Mooresville
- Continue on Main Street toward Downtown
- Travel Main Street to West Iredell Avenue
- Turn Left onto West Iredell Avenue to Mooresville Police Department (MPD)

The volume of expected traffic related to the procession prompted some area schools to close early Friday.
“We have been in contact with Iredell County Emergency Services, and they indicate that the processional will be made up of 2,200 to 2,500 emergency vehicles from across the country and be approximately 15 miles long,” Mooresville Graded School District said.
The procession is expected to affect traffic in the Mooresville area from around 1 p.m. until after 4 p.m.
“Due to bussing logistics and to show support for Officer Sheldon, we will need to release school early on Friday, May 10,” MGSD said.
Here’s a list of closures expected in the Mooresville area Friday, May 10:
- Mooresville High School and Mooresville Middle School will release at 11a.m.
- Mooresville elementary and intermediate schools will release at 12 noon.
- Community School of Davidson will also have early dismissal, beginning at 11:45 a.m. for K-7, and at noon for 8th grade and high school students.
- Mooresville Skatepark, which is located at 748 W. Iredell Avenue, will temporarily close May 10 until 5 p.m., according to Mooresville Parks & Recreation.
