Here are the top six stories in Raleigh today:
- An error in candidate filing could cloud current Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman's run for a third term. After filing a public records request, journalists discovered that Freeman's signature is missing from the paperwork required to run. Freeman says that she was aware of the mistake after the North Carolina State Board of Elections informed her. No one has challenged Freeman's candidacy at this point in time, and the State Board takes responsibility for the oversight. (CBS17)
- Patrons of Dorothea Dix Park were distraught to discover that their belongings had been robbed while visiting the sunflowers Friday. Multiple vehicles were targeted on that day, and police believe that thieves used a "relay attack," technology to intercept the frequency of key fobs to unlock cars. Police cannot prove that is what happened, but believe it is a strong possibility, and are warning of the growing phenomenon. (WRAL)
- The Raleigh Fire Department has been battling a shortage for some time now, but it is currently the worst it has been in 25 years. Raleigh's Assistant Chief for Professional Development Ian Toms says the department currently have 67 vacancies within the department and anticipates the number to hit 71 as other firefighters prepare to retire. On Friday the department began its lateral transfer program to help fill vacancies. (CBS17)
- Wake County Schools are also struggling with staffing issues, as the beginning of the year approaches and nearly 30% of bus driver positions are vacant. A former bus driver for Wake County left the job after more than a decade, citing pay not keeping up with the cost of living, requirements to manage student behavioral issues and unfit working conditions. District officials are working through how routes will run in the coming school year and hope to have more information on the situation in coming weeks. (WRAL)
- As temperatures are rising across the city, Raleigh workers are trying to maintain safe working conditions. OSHA and the North Carolina department of labor are working to create standards for hazardous heat conditions. The NCDOL is focusing on outreach, education and training to create processes that make sense for North Carolina. (abc11)
- Two individuals have been arrested in a shooting that took place earlier this week in Cary. The shooting seriously injured one man around 10:45 p.m. Salwa Saif Assaedi was charged on Thursday and her brother, Abraham Saif Assaedi surrendered to authorities on Friday afternoon with his attorney present. According to police, the shooting was domestic-related, and the case has been turned over to the Wake County DA's office following Friday's arrest. (CBS17)
