Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson held a press conference at 3 p.m. on Wednesday to address violent crime in the city. Patterson said that officers are working around the clock to address violence in the city. Raleigh has had 23 homicides so far this year, with four that have taken place in the month of July. Patterson did note that violent crime numbers are trending down, in spite of the increase this past week. (abc11, RPD Facebook, WRAL)
  2. As the city of Raleigh works toward the Raleigh Transit Corridors, residents are concerned that the project threatens affordable housing concerns. The implementation of the Wake Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is underway and the city council has begun finalizing a new zoning district to address development and affordability. Residents came out to a hearing on the matter to share their concerns that the new Transit Overlay District won't do enough to combat gentrification and will increase the potential for displacement of residents. (INDY Week)
  3. The Blue Ridge Corridor is going to see major renovation soon. Jeff Murison, the executive director of the Blue Ridge Corridor Alliance said that the project will bring the corridor into the future and "is a more integrated and partnership vision." The corridor is home to PNC Arena, Carter-Finley Stadium and the NC Museum of Art. The hope is to turn it into a cohesive environment that is a destination in the city. (CBS17)
  4. Two major accidents on Garner Road have residents calling for the Raleigh Police Department to do something to combat speeding. Garner Road is a 35 mile per hour zone, but speeding continues to play a part in accidents in the area. The most recent accident happened on Monday, when a white pick-up truck crashed into two cars and a house. According to residents, nothing has been done although there are years' worth of complaints filed with the city. (abc11)
  5. Raleigh NC was ranked number 31 among the 100 greenest cities to work in. The rankings were compiled by Moneypenny and they looked at the biggest cities in the U.S. by population to determine the greenest metros. Among the categories considered were air quality, number of parks, average distance to work and more. (KISS95.1FM) North Carolina as a whole was ranked the best state for business in the 2022 edition of CNBC's "America's Top States for Business." (CNBC, WECT)
