Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Raleigh Police introduced the new Community Violence Intervention program on Wednesday. The program is a collaboration among several organizations to provide support for people at risk of violence. The Raleigh Police Department, Raleigh-Apex NAACP and other organizations are looking to curb gun violence through the program as gun violence is on the rise nationally and locally. Raleigh-Apex NAACP said it is currently in the early phases of the project. (CBS17)
- A state audit has found dozens more stores in North Carolina overcharging for items in 2022, including a handful in Raleigh. In a typical year, $40,000 to $50,000 in fines are handed out, but the past year there have been more than half a million dollars handed out. Forty-two stores were fined in the first quarter of 2022. Among those fined are the Walmart Supercenter on Fayetteville Road and the Advance Auto on Glenwood Avenue. If you are shopping and items ring up more than advertised, you should alert the manager, and if you believe the store is being unfair you can report the location. (WRAL)
- Wake County's new DNA lab is getting closer to completion and the excitement around it is building. Director of the Raleigh Wake City-County Bureau of Identification, Sam Pennica emphasizes that what was once a dream is becoming a reality. Wake County accounts for 10-20% of DNA work done at the state crime lab, and the county will no longer have to wait for samples to be sent off. The CCBI is hoping that the lab will be fully operational by the end of next year or early 2024. (CBS17)
- The Raleigh housing market is beginning to cool, with 26% of Redfin sellers dropping their price last month. According to realtor Hilary Kennedy, the market is balancing and returning to a pre-pandemic precedent. Builders are now able to get supplies needed and it is alleviating waitlists as builders try to entice prospective homeowners. (abc11, WRAL)
- A delivery truck caught fire at a Sam's Club in Raleigh on Thursday afternoon. The incident took place around 4:30 p.m. as the trailer was backed up to the store's loading dock. According to Robert Hodge, a battalion chief for RFD, the cab was surrounded by the stores concrete walls, which prevented the blaze from spreading to the building or roof. By the time units arrived to the scene they said that the fire was "basically out." Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire. (CBS17)
