Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Following the expiration of the federal unemployment benefits, Democrats are seeking to improve North Carolina's existing system. Currently, North Carolina gives some of the lowest benefits in the nation. Individuals who apply for unemployment can receive a maximum allotment of $350 per week, for between 12-20 weeks. The proposed bill would raise the maximum state benefit to $500 a week for up to 26 weeks. (WNCT9)
  2. A nursing assistant at the Wake County Public Health Center on Sunnybrook Road has been arrested and is facing charges after officials claim he placed a camera in the women's restroom. James Perry has worked at the rehabilitation center for 17 years and is charged with installing/using a photo device in a room and carrying a concealed gun. Currently, Perry is still employed with the county, but officials say they are still investigating the case. He is scheduled to appear in court at 9:00 am today. (WRAL)
  3. Broughton High School in Raleigh was in a code yellow community lockdown on Tuesday morning. A letter from the principal informed parents that the campus lockdown went into place at approximately 8:35 am because of "what has been deemed a threat to our campus." Police officers arrived on scene and conducted an investigation, and gave clearance to lift the lockdown around 10:10 am. Police told CBS that a "robo-type call" was made to the school at 8:11 am and issued threats that proved to be unfounded. It appears that the number has made similar calls to other schools across the country. (CBS17)
  4. Starting today, double check before you go out to shop for your late night grocery needs. Harris Teeter stores and some Publix locations have announced they will be closing by 9:00 pm. A Harris Teeter representative says that the early closure will allow them to focus on cleaning, replenishment, staffing, and overall well-being for employees. Other grocers have already adjusted to closing earlier, and market amenities close down even earlier. (CBS17)
  5. Governor Roy Cooper has proclaimed this week, September 12-19 as Small Business Week. In North Carolina, small businesses generate more than $29 billion in total exports, and prior to the pandemic the 934,000 North Carolina small businesses accounted for 99% of N.C. employers. You can read the Governor's official proclamation here. (WNCT9) Right now the Secretary of State's office has said the state is on track to shatter it's single-year record for new business creation.
