Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- On Monday, the Raleigh Police Department held a community meeting with Justice Served NC. Neighbors discussed concerns of community-officer relations, race relations, violent crime and officer response times. Justice Served NC executive director, Diana Powell says that addressing safety and officer-community relations is one of her top concerns. Police Chief Estella Patterson was also present and hopes that officers and neighbors can come together to talk and listen. (CBS17)
- For the first time in the Raleigh Boychoir's 55-year history, girls will be able to join the group. The arts organization said on Tuesday that they are rebranding and being more inclusive and a name change and tuition reduction will follow. Auditions for the choir will be held on Monday, July 25 and Monday, August 15 at 6 p.m. (WRAL)
- Wake County is in the process of planning three new nature preserves and are looking for public feedback on the locations. Proposals for the new nature preserves include Little River, Buffalo Creek and Swift Creek. Staff and consultants are expected to provide conceptual designs this week during community meetings today and Thursday and community feedback will help shape the design concept. (WRAL)
- Emergency crews responded to a deadly crash on Barwell Road in southeast Raleigh on Tuesday. The crash was reported just before 3:10 a.m. near Tomahawk Trail and Rock Quarry Road. It appears that only one car was involved in the crash. The vehicle was overturned and one person died in the crash. (WRAL)
- Raleigh's La Santa was forced to close temporarily following a fire. The restaurant let customers know via social media that it would be closed until further notice, due to a fire in a condo above the restaurant. The fire was found to be related to an electrical issue and it triggered the sprinkler system. Damage to La Santa was due to the water and owners hope to reopen today pending a follow-up inspection. (CBS17)
- Cary firefighters were honored on Monday for their efforts at the Harlon Drive apartment fire in March. The group of 15 firefighters received SAVE Awards for their bravery and going beyond the call of duty to rescue several people, including a mother and her baby. The Cary Fire Department also received the Commissioner's Award on Monday for 100 years of service. (WRAL)
