Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Four teens from Carnage Middle School have developed a STEM project that could help prevent mass shootings. The group took second place at a state level science fair called eCYBERMISSION for their project. The goal is to make an impact on their community to help prevent mass shootings, especially in schools. The team was able to figure out how to automatically lock a gun while entering a specific area using a signal. The teens believe that this technology could be the answer to saving lives. (CBS17)
  2. Shaw University hosted a community meeting on Monday night focused on its campus redevelopment plan. The initial meeting was on May 16, and the school is seeking input from students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community. There are several meetings planned for the summer, as they plan to develop new resident halls, a student center, and other facilities. (WRAL)
  3. Wake County is seeking more landlords to join the "Lease 2 Home" program for those who don't have a permanent place to live. The program helps those who face typical barriers to finding affordable homes like a low credit score or criminal record. The county started the program a few months ago and so far 78 landlords have signed on, but they need more. The county is offering incentives to landlords including a $500/$750 voucher for leases signed through the program and a $1,000 renewal bonus. (CBS17)
  4. Wake County teachers are in need of supplies for the upcoming school year, and WakeEd Partnership has launched its "Back to School with Tools4Schools" campaign. People can donate school supplies as a wide variety of supplies are in high demand. Teachers spend an average of $526 of their own money on classroom supplies for students, but there are several locations throughout Wake County that will be open through August 16. (WRAL)
  5. Garner police responded to the Walmart just south of Raleigh on Fayetteville Street after a man threatened to "shoot up" the store. The man was arrested on charges of larceny and assault on a female after he was caught stealing from the store. The victim, an employee of the location was telling the man to leave the store when the man spit in her face and threatened the location, although he only had a pocket knife on his person. Tehron Jordan was arrested, and taken to the Wake County Detention Center. (CBS17)
