Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Raleigh police arrested Willie Edward Frederick in connection with a fatal shooting on Saturday afternoon. The shooting took place around 1:30 p.m. on Piedmont Ridge Circle, and resulted in the death of Aaron Jamel Downer. The shooting was the fifth gun violence murder in Raleigh this week. Diana Powell of Justice Served NC said that Chief Patterson is doing a tremendous job, but community activists continue to emphasize that people need to be involved in bringing awareness. (abc11, WRAL)
- As COVID-19 moves towards endemic status, experts say vaccines and boosters are critical in keeping future waves at bay. The BA.4 and BA.5 variants are more contagious and becoming more dominant across North Carolina. Researchers at NC State University are working on an inhalable COVID-19 vaccine that could be administered through an inhaler. Researchers have created the vaccine and are studying the benefits and how it could be used as a tool moving forward. The inhalable vaccine is beneficial because it can be held at room temperature and possibly self administered. (WCNC)
- More cars were stuck in flood waters across Raleigh and the Triangle as roads were hit by torrential rains. A flash flood warning was issued as heavy rains brought up to two inches of water on Saturday night. At least two vehicles were stuck in flood waters on Atlantic Avenue just north of Highwoods Boulevard. Other cars were stuck in the typical area off of Interstate 330 westbound near the Glenwood Avenue exit. (CBS17)
- A mother-daughter-duo hosted a Saturday event to provide mental health resources and groups to people who may not feel comfortable seeking help. Kashinda Marche founded Kreate to connect women and girls to mental wellness. Between the recent mass shootings and pandemic strains, Marche says that people don't always feel like they can talk about it. Marche experienced mental health struggles firsthand beginning more than 25 years ago when her daughter Asia was born, now they work together to help provide resources. (WRAL)
- This week Governor Roy Cooper's office announced that he signed 19 new bills into law. Among the laws passed are changes to the existing law governing the assistance program for victims of rape and sex offenses, changes to the alcoholic beverage laws in the state, environmental law changes, mandated safety improvements for elevators inside N.C. vacation cottages and more. (CBS17, WFMY2, WWAY) Other notable happenings in North Carolina include SCOTUS preparing to hear North Carolina's redistricting case (abc15) and Governor Cooper issuing an executive order to protect doctors and nurses performing abortions for out of state patients. (INDY Week, WMBF)
