Community advocates are mourning, weighing a vigil, and pushing for transparency while officials warn against harmful social media speculation and highlight the need for better mental health support.

2. Data Center Project in Southeast Raleigh Withdrawn Before City Council Vote (caro.news) — A controversial 100,000-square-foot data center proposed for southeast Raleigh near Jones Sausage Road has been shelved after the developer withdrew its annexation request before a City Council vote. The move halts a project that drew strong neighborhood opposition and raises fresh questions about how Raleigh will handle future data center proposals near homes.

3. Pushback continues against proposed Raleigh youth curfew as other cities tout success (cbs17.com) — Raleigh leaders are weighing a youth curfew that would keep anyone 17 and under off city streets between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., following violent teen "takeovers" over the July 4 weekend. Police cite safety and examples from Winston-Salem and Fayetteville, while youth advocates argue curfews don't reduce crime and want more investment in engagement programs before the Sept. 15 council vote.

4. 35 people arrested as Raleigh police, ALE investigation hones in on downtown's Moore Square (cbs17.com) — Raleigh police and state ALE agents arrested 35 people around Moore Square and the GoRaleigh Station, prompting the city to close one station entrance amid concerns about drugs and safety. Officials say undercover buys uncovered crack, fentanyl and alcohol sales, including by juveniles, and more arrests are expected as they target networks affecting downtown businesses and families.

5. 'Time was of the essence': Raleigh first responders detail mile-high rescue at Grandfather Mountain (wral.com) — Raleigh Fire Department crew members helped airlift a badly injured hiker from Grandfather Mountain after a 50-foot fall, flying out from Raleigh with the NCHART rescue team.
