Raleigh Poor People's Campaign: 13 Arrests Reported

Protesters held signs and demonstrated in Raleigh on Monday. More than 150 people reportedly tried to enter the Legislative Building.

RALEIGH, NC — Thirteen demonstrators with the Poor People's Campaign were reportedly arrested in Raleigh on Monday afternoon. The movement, which seeks to highlight — and change — inequalities that hurt America's poorest populations, returned to the city with a new message: give people better access to health care and do more for the environment. The demonstration began around 2 p.m. at the Bicentennial Plaza, located on East Jones Street.

Martin Brock, police chief at the General Assembly, told The Associated Press that more than 150 people with the movement tried to enter the state's Legislative Building and 13 people were placed in zip ties near the offices of House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger. He said they faced trespassing charges.

The AP reported that 87 people have been either arrested or cited in Raleigh alone since the movement kicked off protests in mid-May.
