Raleigh Artist Peter Maeck Named One of "Hot 100 Photographers"

Photographer Peter Maeck of Raleigh has been named one of the "Hot 100 of 2021" by YourDailyPhotograph.com, the industry's leading online journal for international collectors of fine art photography. Peter beat 4,500 artists from around the world to take home the prestigious honor.

"As a photographer who is also a writer," says Maeck, "I take a storytelling approach to picture-making, albeit a photo is captured in 1/500th of a second and a novel can take a year or more to write."

Photography's extreme focus on the present moment is exactly what excites Maeck. This does not confine awareness, he says, but rather expands it in that, "as a frozen present-tense moment, a photograph is thus eternal."

In this spirit Maeck created his book of photographs and poetry "Remembrance of Things Present: Making Peace with Dementia," celebrating his father's brave, good-humored experience with Alzheimer's Disease. Placing his pictures of his father and others with dementia alongside those of young people highlighted generational relationships. Says Maeck, "I saw that the line from youth to late adulthood, while often obscured by time and varieties of experience, can nevertheless be perceived as unbroken, especially in photographs that present early and latter stages of life as distant mirrors of each other."

After many years in New York City and Boston, Peter Maeck and his wife Jessie, a former professional modern dancer, moved to Raleigh in 2015 where Peter's brother-in-law Thomas Sayre is an internationally recognized sculptor and painter, and co-founder of the design firm Clearscapes. Extended family in the Triangle includes another brother-in-law, Geoffrey Sayre-McCord, a professor of philosophy at UNC Chapel Hill.

“Joining the 99 other truly great artists on this "Hot 100' list is a huge honor for me," says Maeck, whose multi-award-winning work has been exhibited in New York City and internationally.

Artists named by YourDailyPhotograph.com to the influential "Hot 100" list are selected by a panel of experts. The selection committee does not accept applications for entry into the annual award program. Instead, winners are selected based on quality of the work produced.
