Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- J. Cole's Dreamville music festival is set to return to Raleigh next weekend, in a two-day event. The event's first year sold out with 40,000 people in attendance and more than half of them staying over night. The 2019 festival generated more than $4 million in economic impacts. This year the festival will likely generate far greater impact as the event will be across two days instead of one. (CBS17) NCMA has also revealed its summer outdoor performance and dance lineup. - Two major figures are speaking out to clear the record on their controversial actions.
- Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman had questions raised regarding her handling of a sexual assault accusation against one of her prosecutors. Freeman stated that while she was concerned with the allegations, she did not feel the employee wanted her to take further action. (WRAL)
- North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson is opening up about his decision to provide his now-wife with an abortion in 1989. Robinson, a staunch conservative, says that the decision was one of the hardest they have ever made, wrong, and an influential factor in his adamantly pro-life stance now. Democrats have taken the confession to emphasize the need for healthcare access, while Republican colleagues have voiced support for his confession and acknowledgement. (WRAL)
- Residents of Raleigh's Cameron Park neighborhood have followed the lead of other Cameron namesake institutions, and voted to change the name of the community to Forest Parks. The Cameron Family was one of the largest and wealthiest slaveholding families in North Carolina, and the vote to rename the neighborhood passed by a narrow margin. (abc11)
- Four people have been displaced after a Thursday afternoon fire. The Raleigh Fire Department responded to a townhome on Woodcroft Drive just after 1:00 pm. No one was injured in the accidental fire, but 75% of the home was damaged. (CBS17)
- A new rankings report places Raleigh among the top 10 most affordable major metropolitan areas, although the median rental price is up 20.7% compared to last year. The report was conducted by Realtor.com and ranked Raleigh as 10 among the 50 most populous metropolitan areas in the United States. (WRAL Tech Wire) Raleigh has also seen the largest decline in home sale inventory in over 2 years. (abc11)
