Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- On Saturday, Raleigh fire announced that two engines are out of service due to staffing shortages. Engine 13 services the west side of downtown and engine 4 serves the Six Forks corridor. The Facebook post announced the temporary service suspension, "Until leaders admit massive issues and come to the table to work on real solutions ... this will be the new norm." (abc11, CBS17)
- Raleigh police had to shut down a stretch of Industrial Drive to Six Forks Road. The road, located behind the Wegmans grocery store was forced to close after a water line break. The break also led to the development of a sink hole and some water outages. Traffic was detoured along Wake Towne Drive and some customers along Front Street were without water. (CBS17)
- The North Carolina General Assembly is set to reconvene in Raleigh this week, but there will not be any attempts to override new vetoes by Governor Roy Cooper. The House and Senate planned floor meetings for Tuesday, as part of a series of brief work periods lined up through December. In a Friday email from chief of staff for Speaker Tim Moore, it was expressed that the House won't hold recorded votes and a spokesperson for Senate leader Phil Berger said the Senate doesn't anticipate similar votes. (WSOC-TV, WWAY3)
- The North Carolina Association of Educators announced that it is opposing a proposal that would change how teachers are licensed and paid. The plan could lead to higher pay for teachers but would eliminate the current pay structure that is based on seniority, and the Association of Educators say it is based on "obscure benchmarks." The plan would increase starting pay, and the current state salary schedule, but according to the NCAE would also threaten to revoke teacher's license if they failed to meet benchmarks. (CBS17) School systems across North Carolina are already scrambling to fill teaching positions as many are leaving the industry entirely. (abc11)
