Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Wake County's top leaders gathered on Thursday to share details for their plans for the coming year. The annual State of the City, County and Schools luncheon took place at the Raleigh Convention center at 11:30 a.m. Several leaders called for voters to support bond issues, affordable housing development and the future commuter rail line from Durham to Garner/Clayton. They say that these investments are critical even as inflation reaches 40-year highs. Leaders also talked about efforts to make the county safer among rising gun violence (WRAL)
  2. Mike Walden, a longtime economist at NC State predicts that inflation has peaked, but that a recession is likely to follow. According to Walden, the recent drop in gas prices will likely lead to a lower inflation rate when next month's report comes out. He also predicts that North Carolina will be more protected than other areas due to the strong growth in the area, and as people lose jobs in other states they may consider a move to North Carolina. (CBS17)
  3. Raleigh police have arrested Kevin Parker, after DNA linked him to three rapes. One of the charges stemmed from a cold case in Greenville that took place in 2005. The other two took place in Raleigh in November 2018 and April 2019. Parker is being held on an $8 million bond and is facing a variety of charges stemming from the sex offences and burglary. (abc11, FOX8, WITN, WRAL)
  4. Four inmates at the Wake County Detention Center are facing charges following an assault on a detention officer. The four men are charged with one count of assaulting and physically injuring a detention officer and one count of felony conspire assault. Two of the four were in temporary custody, pending transfer when the attack happened. The officer has been treated and released. (CBS17, WRAL)
  5. Downtown Raleigh is making history as for the first time, among nearly 100 storefronts listed, 50% or more are woman owned. The Downtown Raleigh Alliance has been intentionally investing in female- or minority-owned business grants and providing pop-up shops on Martin Street. Business owners have signed on to six-month pop-up space leases giving them the opportunity to get acclimated to running a business downtown. (abc11)
